Mee Tarik Warisan Asli. AEON Dato' Onn. Johor JB

I always marvelled at how noodle masters from Lanzhou 兰州 (Northwest China) can turn a bag of flour, water and oil into fine slender noodles without using any machines. Mee tarik or hand pulled noodles recently arrived in Johor Bahru. I tried the popular Mee Tarik Warisan Asli at the just opened AEON Bandar Dato' Onn.

Mee Tarik Warisan Asli has many outlets in Malaysia. The outlet at AEON Bandar Dato' Onn is their newest. It is modern, clean and neatly laid out.

I like it that Mee Tarik Warisan Asli makes the hand pulled noodles only when there is an order - in the same way roti canai is made only on order. So, the hand pulled noodles are always fresh in true 蘭州拉麵 tradition.

I started with a "Wet Mee with Ziran Mutton" (price RM15.80).

The hand pulled noodles were hidden under a heap of small mutton slices and julienned onion, capsicum etc stir fried with a greasy spicy sauce.

The mutton slices were stiff and fibrous. The tongue numbing spices masked most flavours in the chewy, grease coated mutton. A bit of mutton gaminess remained though.

The noodles were slurpy smooth, tender but have a delicate spring. They were as good as any hand pulled noodles that I have tasted anyway, including in China where Lanzhou hand pull noodles are ubiquitous.

Despite the tough and none too tasty mutton, I liked Mee Tarik Warisan Asli's hand pulled noodles so much that I decided to order a second helping - this time a spicy Mee Soup with Braised Beef (price RM14.80).

The soup was greasy, with tongue numbing spices and very salty. The little cubes of beef were small like dice, and they were stiff, almost hard. If there was any beef flavour at all, the salty spicy soup overwhelmed it.

The soup also washed away the noodles' delicate bounce leaving only limp soft strands. The heavily flavoured and oily "soup" also masked all of the noodles' subtle taste.

👉 I like Warisan's hand pulled noodles and it is enough to bring me back. But, I will only order the dry versions so that I can enjoy the noodles' delicate taste and special texture.
