Most people who grew up in Malaysia and Singapore have seen teh tarik, but what about soup tarik?

This is one of Johor Bahru's best known Teochew kway teow soup boss at work.

Most Chinese residents of Johor Bahru would have heard of Ah Hwa kway teow thng 亚华粿條汤. The original push cart stall was opened in 1957 at the Jalan Tan Hiok Nee area by the present boss' father 陈悅华 (阿华). The present boss (Tan Seaw Hong 陈少峰) has been working with his dad at Ah Hwa since he was 15 years old.

Fifty years in the business, Mr Tan has a following of loyal regulars. This is the crowd on a Monday morning at 10:00am. There was a constant stream of regulars bringing their friends. There were also out of town visitors coming in car and van loads to visit Ah Hwa.

The humble boss was always friendly and cheerful when meeting his customers guests. He is like a local celebrity :D

Our order arrived in about 15 minutes on a Monday morning. Weekend orders take at least 30 minutes.

At kway teow thng shops, I always order the "dry" version so that I can enjoy the best of both worlds, the sauce and also the soup.

The soft kway teow was topped with fresh pork slices, pork liver, minced pork and pieces of fried shallots. I loved all the toppings, especially the crunchy and flavourful fried shallots. The boss said they fry the shallots everyday at 4:00am in the morning. (No tasteless, factory fried "wood chips" here.)

The kway teow after tossing in the gooey tangy, sweet, spicy and savoury sauce. The sauce was a blend of mainly vinegar, dark soy, shallot oil and chili paste.

This is the bowl of light savoury broth (made with pork bone stock) that came with the kway teow.

In the soup, there were a few pieces of this wet, spongy fried fish maw 鱼螵.

There were a couple of this shell fish slices. We can upgrade to sliced abalone at additional cost.

We like the sauce so much that we ordered a small low she fun or mouse noodles 老鼠粉 version to try satisfy our sudden craving.

The low she fun or mouse noodles 老鼠粉 tossed with the same tangy, sweet, spicy and savoury sauce. Love the aromatic and uniquely delightful sauce.

Even small details like this cut chili is done well. They were so fresh, juicy and crunchy!

Another customer's luxury edition :P Will try this next round :D

I am so glad that I finally visited the legendary Ah Hwa Eating House 亚华粿條汤 today, after missing it so many times. If you are a foodie, you need to drop by Ah Hwa at least once to try it for yourself.

  2. Oh yes. The food is very nice and the price is reasonable. I typically like their 'dry' version of koay teow.
