To get a taste of 香香小食 Xiang Xiang Cooked Food's traditional Chinese sweet snacks, you gotta get out of bed early, unless you live near Chinatown Complex.

There is always a queue at Xiang Xiang Cooked Food from the time the stall opens at 6:00am. On weekends, most items would be sold out by 9:00am and by 10:00am everything is definitely gone.

Everything is handmade and freshly cooked at the stall.

The sweet potato balls (番薯蛋 or 地瓜球), made with a blend of mashed sweet potato and glutinous rice flour were tender with a gently chewy bite. The skin was crisp outside.

The balls had a slight layered natural sweetness from the sweet potato and glutinous rice. When we bit into the ball, it released a subtle sweet aroma.

I like this more than those I tried in Taiwan night markets 😱

This onde onde is quite a foodie killer.

It is a sweet potato-glutinous rice ball filled with palm sugar, boiled and then coated with grated coconut.

Multi layers of sweetness from all the sweet things released by chewing on that tender chewy organic 100% legal chewing gum.

Kueh Ubi Kayu or Steamed Tapioca Cake.

The sticks of steamed tapioca cake were coated with grated coconut. The tapioca cake was just slightly firmer than jelly. I enjoyed the layers of natural sweetness from the tapioca and grated coconut.

Xiang Xiang also serves excellent freshly fried Jian Dui (煎堆).

The Jian Dui, size of a chicken egg, is made with glutinous rice flour. It is encrusted with sesame seeds and deep fried till golden brown.

The glutinous rice skin was crisp outside, and tenderly chewy with a slight nutty taste from the sesame seeds. The green bean paste filling was gently naturally sweet.

The crushed peanut filled Jian Dui was also nice. Again, not too sweet, just mainly natural sweetness.  I also like it that Xiang Xiang's jian dui were not greasy.

All these traditional small bites make a good light breakfast with coffee or tea.
