Wanton Mee Stall @ Cheng Heng Coffee Shop in Seri Austin 成兴美食坊

We wandered into Cheng Heng coffee shop in a quiet neighbourhood back street in Taman Seri Austin on a hot mid day. We were surprised but happy to bump into Mdm Au Yong whose wanton mee stall used to be at No Signboard coffee shop at Jalan Maju (near Plaza Pelangi).

Mdm Au Yong moved her humble, nondescript stall here for four months already. Her fans from Jalan Maju are slowly finding her, coming back in trickles. Meanwhile, she is building a new fan base from the neighbourhood.

Mdm Au Yong still makes her soup the old way, only with pork bones and dried sole fish 大地魚.

Mdm Au Yong's wanton mee (dry version). The mound of egg noodles was topped with slices of char siew, some leafy greens, chopped scallion, and fried minced pork.

The thin slices of char siew were lean and quite dry.

To establish herself in her new neighbourhood, Mdm Au Yong upped her game, adding fried minced pork to her wanton mee to give her customers more value. She never had this before at Jalan Maju and this is also not part of traditional wanton mee. Personally, this didn't add much to the wanton mee 😛

The winner at Mdm Au Yong's wanton mee stall is her egg noodles.

The egg noodles are supplied by Ho Meng Kee 何明記, one of JB's oldest, and leading wanton mee maker and distributor. Many little wanton mee stalls around Johor Bahru use Ho Meng Kee's  noodles.

Mdm Au Yong does the tender egg noodles to a nice light spring to the bite. We like it.

Mdm Au Yong uses the chili sauce supplied by Ho Meng Kee which she fine tuned with lard, aromatic oil (infused with fried shallot flavour), light soy sauce and dark soy sauce. The result is a nice mildly spicy savoury sauce which complemented the subtle eggy sweetness of the springy noodles.

The wanton mee set comes with a bowl of soup and wantons. Mdm Au Yong threw in a couple of Sui Kow 水饺 prawn dumplings in my bowl out of goodwill 😄 (Last two left today as they are sold out for the day she said. Lucky me 😄 )

Made with just pork bones and dried sole fish without the "benefit" of MSG, the soup tastes just subtly savoury sweet with a bit of flavour from aromatic fried shallot oil.

Old school wanton - just a tiny pinch of minced pork folded into a large sheet of wanton skin. It was very smooth, so much so that I had a really hard time holding it up for this photo 😂

Mdm Au Yong's Sui Kow 水饺 is over sized. She doesn't make many, so have to be here early to get this.

The Sui Kow packed full with minced fresh pork and prawns. Nice layers of sweetness from the marbled pork and prawns.

We also had a soup version of wanton mee. The egg noodles were softened a little by soaking in the soup but they were still springy.

Same itsy bitsy wanton in the same soup 😄

Mdm Au Yong's wanton mee come in small (RM5), medium (RM6) and large (RM7) servings.
