黃記滷肉飯 is a popular 50 year old braised pork rice (lu rou fan) shop but is a well kept secret among locals. The shop is tucked away on a narrow one way street near to Qingguang Park 晴光公園, a small city park and children's playground.

Customers like 黃記滷肉飯 because the rice is nicely done - the tender grains are loose and separate (not lumped together like soggy cake). The plain white rice is smothered in a blanket of minced pork and thick savoury brown stock.

The minced pork is made using pork belly with equal parts of lean meat and pork fat. The braised pork is cooked and sold daily (everything is fresh, nothing overnight).

To eat, fold the rice and braised pork with brown sauce into each other so that the rice is fully infused with the pork and sauce flavours and aromas.

Braised pork rice (lu rou fan) is traditionally eaten with side dishes.

A must order side dish is their signature savoury sweet braised pork knuckle 蹄膀肉 which has a nice combination of fat, meat and skin. Soft fat, springy skin and tender meat all at once. The fat dissolves quickly in the mouth.

Stewed cabbage 鹵白菜 and braised tofu 油豆腐 are must have comforting savoury staples to go with the braised pork rice.

Get also a bowl of crunchy sweet bamboo shoots cooked in pork bone soup 竹筍湯 which many regulars cannot go without.

If you prefer a thicker soup, get their 香菇赤肉羹 mushroom and lean pork soup thicken with starch.
