Gerai Ayong at Tepian Tebrau hawker centre is another long time JB people's favourite which I finally checked off my Must Eat list 😄 Now, I have moved it to my IWBB list - I will be back list 👍

Tepian Tebrau is a popular hawker centre for JB locals. It was crowded even on the Monday night we were there when half the stalls were closed.

Ah Yong founded Gerai Ayong 40 years ago with his sister - it was one of the many push carts stalls operating at Lido beach. Several of the well loved Lido beach stalls moved to Tepian Tebrau, which explains the popularity of the food centre.

Ah Yong helps customers choose their seafood (sold by weight) at the front.

There's squid, stingray, red snapper fish, black and silver pomfret, and sea bass half buried in crushed ice.

The menu is on the blue signboard above the stall. Five of us, we tried most of the dishes on the menu.

Tauhu Bakar.

Squares of tofu grilled to a golden brown crisp outside were smothered in a thick sticky savoury sweet spicy nutty sauce.

Char Kuih Bakar. It's short pieces of yew char kway grilled and slathered with a heavy savoury sweet spicy nutty sauce (same sauce as tauhu bakar).

Sotong Kangkong. Leafy kangkong greens with soft crunchy (rehydrated dried) cuttlefish blanketed with a savoury spicy sweet sauce topped with crushed peanuts.

Sotong Bakar. Ayong's pastey sambal chili sauce is robustly savoury spicy with additional sourish sweet spicy notes from the onion and chili pickle topping. The charred banana leaf underneath imparts a subtle toasty sweet flavour to the grilled squid.

Sambal Kerang. Blood cockles grilled with sambal chili. The briny taste of fresh blood cockles blend uniquely well with robustly savoury spicy sauce.

The real measure of any ikan bakar stall is, of course, its grilled sambal stingray.

Here, Gerai Ayong's grilled stingray is a star. The stingray was fresh. Expertly grilled, its flesh was soft and wet with briny sweet natural juices. The sambal chili sauce was robustly savoury spicy yet it did not overpower the fish's natural flavours. The sourish spicy sweet onion chili pickle added zesty zing and juicy crunch to the savoury spicy dish.

Uniquely JB style of ice kacang with sweet bitter chocolate sauce. If you are visiting JB, don't leave without trying JB ice kacang.

Leftovers Analysis. Everything gone (except the ladies didn't finish their rice 😝 ). We love everything 😄

4-Star (out of 5). Gerai Ayong is a complete ikan bakar stall with grilled sambal seafood, spicy grilled tofu / you char kway, and also ice kacang. Ingredients are fresh, sambal chili sauce is flavourful, grilling skill is good, prices are competitive, service is friendly and quick, the ambiance and atmosphere at Tepian Tebrau hawker centre is great.
