Chef Wayne tipped me off to a popular dim sum stall in Yong Peng with their top selling lo mai gai 糯米鸡.

Wayne doesn't have the address nor the name of the stall, except that it is just beside the KFC and opens at 1pm.

Well..., that is more than enough information. Really 😄

KFC just stood right there, a minute after I pulled into Yong Peng's only main road, Jalan Besar.

Choon Seng is an old name in Yong Peng town where townsfolk gather from breakfast till supper. Afternoon tea break with dim sum and old school Nanyang kopi is a favourite pastime here.

I was at Choon Seng kopitiam at 1:15pm and there were people queuing for the dim sum as Wayne had told me.

The boss Mr. Diong 張 is a very friendly man. He paused to chat and entertained my request for photos, even though he was very busy. (張 is transliterated Diong in Hock Chew 福州 language.)

Mr. Diong and wife make all the dim sum themselves and sell them from 1pm till sold out (usually by 3-4pm). Mr. Diong have been selling dim sum for over 30 years.

The menu - Mr. Diong has various baos, siew mai, yong tau fu, fish balls, and of course, lo mai kai.

Mr. Diong's various paus are also popular.

Siew Mai.

As this was my third meal for the day, I just limited myself to lo mai kai and Hakka style yong taufu for this round.

Mr. Diong's lo mai gai come in a small mound of glutinous rice topped with pieces of chicken breast. The glutinous rice have a nice tenderly firm texture. The rice tasted mildly savoury sweet and it was not greasy. Mr. Diong's lo mai gai has more chicken than most. The chicken is tender and also tastes savoury sweet.

I ordered the yong taufu because I couldn't resist the thick meaty filling of Hakka style YTF.

The tofu and minced pork filling were quite mild tasting so I gave it a slight flavour kick with Kampung Koh garlic chili sauce ubiquitous in Malaysian coffee shops. It's familiar and comforting - Malaysia's answer to USA's Sriracha sauce.

👉 Mr. Diong's humble simple dim sum and Nanyang coffee from Choon Seng make a nice afternoon stopover break on your way back to JB or Singapore from the north (Malacca or KL). Yong Peng is 100km from JB, so a tea break here will energize you for the rest of your trip. Remember this is open only 1pm - 3pm and off on Saturday.
