Buddy Gwen tipped me off on a popular chicken rice stall in Kim Kooi kopitiam which she and her hubby stumbled upon in Taman Pelangi while doing their marketing there.

Noticing that there is always a queue at the chicken rice stall, Gwen and hubby tried the chicken here and liked it.

The Chinese only signboard at the stall said "怡保仔燒雞飯 Ipoh Boy Roast Chicken Rice". The stall actually serves a few different dishes. While in the queue, I chatted with two friendly gentlemen who are regulars here - they enthusiastically recommended the fried chicken, poached chicken, lemon chicken, and char siew which they said are very good.

(Note to self: They also recommended the siew yok at the Taman Pelangi pasar pagi.)

As the lady boss was very busy clearing the queue of customers, I didn't want to interrupt her work.

As I was alone and this will be my second breakfast this morning, I ordered just a plate of fried chicken rice as this looked like their most popular dish. Then, I shared a table with friendly locals in the quite spacious and airy kopitiam.

A plate of rice, topped with roast chicken, a soup and a small dish of chili sauce for RM4 altogether.

Though the rice was made with average quality grains, there was a big heap of it and the rice was aromatic and well infused with mild layers of savouriness. The rice stuck together but they had a tender-firmness and a nice nutty bite. It was also not overly greasy. I enjoyed this rice.

There was a generous amount of meat for the RM4 price tag. The meat was tender and had a slight natural chicken sweetness. I like the taste of the browned skin - it was savoury sweet and aromatic, and I was hoping there was more skin 😋 ( 😄 Next time, I'll buy a whole bird for all the skin.)

The chili sauce is nice too - fresh, spicy, sourish.

The mildly salty sourish clear soup is made with chicken bone, old cucumber and preserved Chinese mustard.

👉 I like this chicken rice in Kim Kooi kopitiam but this is just a pre-view. I need to gather a few kakis and whack a whole chicken and a few other things like the char siew, fried chicken chop etc. Will blog again after that but in the mean time, if you are around Pelangi during brekky or lunch time, do check out 怡保仔燒雞飯. Tell me how you found it 😄

Kim Hooi kopitiam is along Jalan Sri Pelangi. "Same row as Hong Leong Bank" - in the JB way of giving directions 😄

  1. Try the mee hun kuey which is right beside the chicken stall. Not bad too.I always ask the boss to cook it chilli padi which gives the soup a little kick.

  3. Delicious food without the msg, I think. I don't get palpitations eating the food unlike some other chicken rice places...

I firmly believe that taste is subjective and so, warmly welcome differing viewpoints :-D But, I disapprove negative comments that are anonymous or hide behind fake identities. I feel that that is unethical in the same way as speaking ill of others behind their backs. I look forward to all your comments :-D Thank you. (Date: 18 Dec 2015)
