It's been a couple of months. Whenever I pass this junction at Jalan Serampang and Jalan Sri Pelangi, I wondered what palace they are building here. When I realised that this is a Seven Oaks Bakery Cafe, I was so eager to visit. My first chance came when I was on a JB food trail with Hazel and Hannah.
First impressions were good.
We were impressed that there is a friendly doorman to welcome customers and to help us swing and hold open the huge, heavy glass door.
Stepping into the ground level (Seven Oaks has 4 levels), it's a well appointed bake shop with shelves showing off a wide range of pastries.
There were also bright showcases of dainty, colourful cakes.
We could see the pastry chefs busy at work through the window.
While I was still exploring the bake shop at Seven Oaks, I heard a sudden squeal of delight.
Hannah and Hazel spotted this.
Salted Egg Lava Croissant - the latest food fad that has taken Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur by storm has landed in Johor Bahru. Hey, JB is at the leading edge of food trends :-D
Salted Egg Lava Croissant (流沙牛角面包) is a cross between the French croissant and Chinese molten salted egg yolk lava (liu sha 流沙).
We were really very full as we were on a day long eating trail since morning - but, that didn't stop us from ordering just one Salted Egg Lava Croissant to try.
We just hand over our food to the counter staff at the bake shop and they will allocate us a table at the cafe on the second floor. They will also warm up our pastry and send it to our table upstairs.
It was crowded at the cafe, with many selfie stick wielding customers :-D
There is even a grand looking lift to take us to the upper floors.
A long table at the cafe for nice gatherings. This table was later taken by a three generation family enjoying their cakes and pastries together ;-D So heartwarming.
There is a KTV room on the third floor with a street view. This room has a capacity of 20 people, and the group only needs to spend more than RM500 to use this room for free. (Need to call for booking as this room is in high demand, of course.)
We each had small bites of this croissant and I like the savoury sweet salted egg yolk lava with the buttery flaky pastry. The lava is made with real salted egg yolks (not salted egg yolk powder).
How much did we like it?
Hannah went back to Singapore happily with more than a dozen Salted Egg Lava Croissants. It's RM5.90 each at Seven Oaks. RM6.90 each at Le Bread Days in Petaling Jaya (near KL) and SGD7.50 (RM22.50) at Flavour Flings in Singapore.
(Well, in the beginning you could just walk in and take away a dozen, and there will still be some left on the shelf.)
Hannah raved about it in her blog here :-D Hazel also loved these croissants as she shared in her blog here :-D
I came back a couple of days later and found that Seven Oaks has been tweaking their Salted Egg Lava Croissant.
The salted egg lava was sweeter and cleaner, lighter tasting this time around.
I like Seven Oaks Salted Egg Lava Croissant even more, the second time around :-D
I shall be back for more of Seven Oaks' Salted Egg Lava Croissant and try their other cakes and pastries as well as their savoury dishes such as pastas and burgers.
Seven Oaks has four outlets in Johor Bahru but Salted Egg Lava Croissant is available only at the Pelangi branch.
