Pandan Mutton Soup 班蘭羊肉湯 is one of those famous Johor food that I missed because the legendary shop stopped operations before Johor Kaki blog started. I have only heard of, but never tried Pandan Mutton Soup, till today :-D [Update 2019: This shop has changed owners in 2019.]

The day Pandan Mutton Soup 班蘭羊肉湯 resumed business, JB foodie circles were immediately abuzz with excitement about the good news. So, there are many others who missed Pandan Mutton Soup like me :-D

We rushed to the shop at Kampung Pandan at 2:00pm on it's third day of operation but the mutton soup was sold out :-((

So, we rushed back again on the fourth day at 10:00am.

There was a steady stream of customers of all ages at the simple but comfortable shop with rustic kampung ambiance.

Owner Mr Ho 黄丁益 took over the shop which his father started here 44 years ago at the family home in 1971. As we stood and chatted with Mr Ho, we can smell the seductive herbal aroma from the broth made with over 20 types of herbs boiling in the pot.

Over the years, Pandan Mutton Soup built a huge following with their traditional Hainanese style mutton dishes.

Two of us ordered all these dishes to try. Our total bill came to RM26 (SGD8.60).

Pandan mutton soup is medium bodied. The Hainanese styled broth is mild with savoury, sweet, mutton gaminess and herbal flavours all well balanced. The broth doesn't have that overpowering gaminess nor herbal medicine taste found at some mutton soup places. The broth is also not overly greasy. I happily drank the broth from all the bowls to the last drop. (I didn't get any MSG thirst afterwards too.)

The tender lean mutton has only slight gaminess. Pandan Mutton Soup uses New Zealand lamb which is known for it's gentle flavour.

There are two types of house made chili sauce to eat with the mutton. The one on the left is very spicy and sourish. The darker one on the right is salty but less spicy. I didn't use the sauces as I like to eat my mutton neat.

Jalan Pegaga 3 is narrow and usually full with customers' parked cars.

I usually park outside along Jalan Sendayan where there is normally plenty of parking space and is just a short walk to Pandan Mutton Soup.

As Pandan Mutton Soup opens at 6:00am, it makes it a good choice for breakfast if you are heading north to Kota Tinggi or Mersing via the Tebrau Highway.

->> This is the most famous and well loved Hainanese mutton soup shop in JB. Eating in a kampung house adds to the unique experience of enjoying Pandan Mutton Soup. [Update 2019: This shop has changed owners in 2019.]

  2. Very, very good kambing soup. Meat, stomach, tendon, all so tender and flavorful without much of the games smell, thanks to the secret herbs and spices. The owner recommended us to order the local Malaysian kambing instead of imported frozen one from Australia, we couldn't be happier with this choice. They use female young Kambing about 13-14Kg max, that's probably explains why the meat and all other nutritious parts are so tender and not gamey.

This reminds me of Mok Gao beef soup in Kulai. But this Kambing soup taste cleaner, and I believe more nutritious (especially the stomach, skin and tendon) since the animal is usually fully grassfed, unlike beef that are finished with grain feeding.

Thanks for posting this awesome place Tony.
