Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles in Chinatown NYC New York 清味蘭州拉麵

There are many hand pulled noodle shops in New York's Chinatown. The little shop simply named "Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles" is among the popular ones.

Hand-pulled noodles originate from Lanzhou City in western China and later spread throughout the country. Hand-pulled noodles were brought to New York City by Fuzhou immigrants who arrived in the US in the late 1980s.

"Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles" is located on one of New York Chinatown's oldest and most famous streets, Doyers. In the old days, the bendy curve at Doyers Street was a killing field where triads ambushed each other to settle bloody scores. Happily, today just small restaurants, cut price boutiques and barber shops occupy the short street.

"Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles" is a tiny hole-in-the-wall type of shop at Doyers Street. Inside, it's no frills, elbow-to-elbow seating, often crowded, barely comfortable.

"Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles" is famed for it's ......, what else? Hand-pulled noodles.

When eating here, you can hear the dough being slammed loudly violently on a marble work top as the chef makes the noodles in the kitchen.

My hand-pulled noodle soup with beef USD7.50.

The freshly hand made noodles were medium weight, slightly thick and properly cooked to softly al dente with a slight chew.

I like these noodles.

These were actually the "default" thin noodles. There were also the medium and wide noodles, which I would like to try, next time.

There were nearly 10(?) thin slices of beef in the bowl of noodles. The beef was slightly fibrous and chewy though sufficiently tender. There was not much flavour in the beef. Still, among the beef in hand-pulled noodle shops that I have tried in NYC so far, this was one of the better ones.

The bone broth was medium bodied, quite rich and mildly savoury sweet. I drank up the whole bowl without feeling MSG thirst afterwards.

I like it that additional fresh green cilantro (parsley) garnishing is provided free. I like the grassy bite and refreshing minty flavour and fragrance that cilantro adds to the noodle soup.

I also like their house made spicy hot chili and oil. (House made chili is not often provided in NYC restaurants.)

Next time, the hand-pulled wide noodle soup with ox tail, knife cut noodles and fresh cucumber salad.
